Informal meetings of the Council of the EU
24 July 2016 - 25 July 2016
Informal Meeting of Ministers and State Secretaries for European Affairs (Informal GAC)
On 24-25 July, Bratislava will host an informal meeting of the EU Member States’ ministers and state secretaries responsible for European affairs. The informal meeting, to be chaired by Ivan Korčok, ministre délégué for the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU, will begin on Sunday with a debate on EU enlargement involving the Slovak Republic as Presidency, representatives of candidate countries and the European Commission.
The second day of the meeting will be devoted to discussion on the implementation of and communication on the EU’s strategic priorities. In June 2014, the European Council approved a document called the Strategic Agenda for the Union in Times of Change, which sets out five political priorities for the EU for the next five years. At a time when the EU is facing a multitude of challenges, it is vital to assess the implementation of the agenda to date and to identify areas that require increased attention and effort from the Member States. The issue of improving communication with citizens on European topics and its positive effect on their daily lives will be an equally important part of the debate.
“Ministerial meetings in the country holding the Presidency provide scope for an informal debate on current issues. We aim for an open exchange of opinions that will provide the answer to the question of where we stand in the fulfilment of our priorities and how we can improve the way in which we communicate about them at national and European levels alike,” said Mr Korčok.
The press conference following the meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday 25 July at 13.00 in the Press centre in Reduta, Námestie E. Suchoňa 1, Bratislava.
